I know it's a long shot, but I'm trying to get an older video game to work on Windows 10 and am at my wit's end. Sadly, the game isn't on GOG, but it's "Law and Order: Dead on The Money". I can hear audio, but the intro movie and any cutscenes are just a black screen. The menu comes up fine as well, so I'm assuming it has something to do with codecs and .mov files.

I've tried installing the game, quicktime, java, and directx from the game disk into both my C: drive's program files and x86 program files. I've also tried downloading newer versions of quicktime, java, and directx. I've tried running the program in compatibility mode with windows xp, admin, 640x480. I can view the videos in the game folders with a different video player, and I've tried downloading codec packs.

Any advice before I throw in the towel? :(

Are your mov files associated with a player under Win 10? REMOVE ;) first hint

Did you install directx 9.0c?

AND remove all codecs do not throw more at the system. and check again.

Further DO NOT use program files or X86 folder, bad bad bad bad idea with WIN (any win)

The game shall have its own ingame player! But if you throw too much at it, it might not work

Depending on when the game was made, there could also be an issue with path length. The max path length normally is 256 characters, but sometimes games expect you to install the game to the root directory, so like C:\KAT\Kat.exe for example, and the path length could be (at least for much older games) very short.

Although unless it was a windows 3.1 game i wouldn't expect path length/buffers to be an issue.

Oh and stick with the 8.3 format as well (so no space, no strange characters and so on)

Good catch rtcvb!!!!!! Easy to forget those limitations ;)

Thanks for the replies. :) I have removed the file associations and codecs like you said. I tried to download directx 9, but it said I had to have a win98 or 2000. To install the game, where would you suggest if not the program files? I usually put games on an external drive, I just wasn't sure if it would find the quicktime/java/direct applications.

One of them SHALL work

internal/external doesn't really matter, I even already used USB-sticks ;)

I created a folder D:\GOGGames\whatever

Just keep every part of the folder with a max of 8 characters and no spaces $&^$^$ whatever in there ;)

Applications for windows are registered in the registry with the path to execute. Direct Windows applications are fine in the default installation path, but programs.....hmmmm....nope ;) (at least quite often not, like games)

Thank you, the second directx link did work, and I installed that. Also installed the game on my internal harddrive, still no change. :/

And you did remove the codecs?

Did you also check file associations via explorer? (for .mov files)?

If I would remember whom I helped with a similar problem......I know I did....

Found something which might be applicable for you as well:

I love grunts, hence how I found that video. XD

I did remove the codecs, at least uninstalled the ones in the program list. I checked the file associations, nothing is connected to the .mov file, even uninstalled my player to be sure. I appreciate the help, was really looking forward to playing this. :/

Might have overlapped, did you check post15 in the link I gave you? maybe something similar for you?

Edit now a really nice ones, have to translate from a German problem:

There it boiled down to the media audio wrapper (you might have to google it ;) )

I did. Unfortunately, it's not a GOG game so I can't check GOG settings, and the game wouldn't crash for me, would just keep going with the black screen and audio. I'm not rally sure where I would change Direct X to 3Dfx. Sorry I'm not too intuitive about these kinds of things.

I know you promised me I could clean up on the horses with your tips, but this isn't exactly what I expected.
I'm not really the type to sweep you off your feet, either.
Oh, well, at least it isn't a vacuum cleaner. Those things suck.
If I simply MUST clean up my act, I suppose I-
